Monday Meditation

President Biden is a good and faithful man, who has served this nation with excellence. We’ve always known of his faith and moral vision for the nation. He is a man of integrity whose values are oriented to goodness, mercy, justice and kindness. This is proven by his record and his word. We know more than ever that he is a courageous leader putting this country first. He didn’t want the conversation to revolve around his age and capacity to govern. He changed the narrative to the most important goal for this nation: defeating Donald Trump. That is the goal that is necessary now, for the sake of the whole nation. I believe President Biden will remain a wise and experienced leader, offering advice and counsel all the way to the finish line.

Related to this subject is the conclusion of David Brooks in his recent NY Times opinion piece in which he address the deep social and cultural changes that have radically changed the Republican Party and brought the domination of Trump and sharp division in the nation. Brook concludes:
“The task, then, is to build a new cultural consensus that is democratic but also morally coherent. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that this work of cultural repair will be done by religious progressives, by a new generation of leaders who will build a modern social gospel around love of neighbor and hospitality for the marginalized. But the work of building that culture will take decades. Until then, we, as a democracy, are on thin ice.”

Brooks has a set a lofty vision and big challenge. The implications for leaders of communities of faith are significant, as with other leaders who will be on the front lines for decades to come repairing this ruptured nation.

Let us pray for one another and roll up our sleeves. It’s going to be a tough few decades. We could start with the election in November.
