Monday Meditation
Among the many things I have enjoyed about our experience in San Miguel is the pervasive sense of community life. This comes in the most ordinary ways. So ordinary that it’s hard to describe the “vibe” here. We walk nearly every day in our nearby Juarez Park where people of all ages walk, talk, exercise, watch birds, take dance lessons, play basketball or simply sit on the benches. There are festivities taking place all the time. It’s as if the people are looking for an opportunity to celebrate. It’s a part of their common life. Tranquilo is more than a phrase. I have also noticed that the numerous churches we have visited are more than museums, where only tourists wander in and out. As best I can tell, local people wander in throughout the day to pray, listen to the chants and sit in silence. I love that. And I actually love the sound of the church bells throughout the day. The overall effect for me is a reminder of transcendence. What I’m saying is among all the hustle and bustle of this small tourist city, there is culture that is humane. A culture that respects art, music and neighborliness. I’m going to be looking for this when we return soon to Maryland.
One more thing. I had to visit a dermatologist the other day because of a severe allergic reaction. I called in the morning, she agreed to see me within a couple of hours. She saw me at the time of my appointment with only a 3-minute wait. I had a thorough consultation and recommendation for medicine and advice for when I return home. I learned a great deal from her in a very short time. I’m grateful. The total cost of consultation and medicines was 1,700 pesos ($93). Medical care for the people, in action.
